Instructor: Tim Lane
Registration Deadline: May 15

This project-based workshop is an introductory exploration of the graphic novel and graphic short fiction for students seriously interested in producing their own graphic fiction. We will primarily concentrate on the development of one course-long, student-initiated project focusing on a wide variety of critical considerations: character development, plot, dialogue, subject matter, and the unique characteristics of conveying a story through sequential art. We will also explore research techniques by gathering reference material for the visual and textual rendering of our subjects. Each student's unique interests, strengths, and weaknesses will be addressed personally. Readings include Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, Will Eisner, Art Spiegelman, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, Joe Sacco and Kim Deitch, among others. 3 units. Tuition: $3,120. Lab, materials fee: $75.
