Prefabrication as a Strategy to Productize Architecture

Rocio Romero, Visiting Professor

Architecture has traditionally been a service-based vocation, but in a consumer-oriented culture it makes sense to sell it as a product. This studio explores how prefabrication can be used as a strategy to productize architecture, and to help students establish their own
architectural lexicon.

The project for this studio is the design of an interior spatial component that defines a dwelling, be it a home, apartment, or loft studio. Emphasis is placed on designing architectural core spaces, such as bathroom core, kitchen core, room divider, desk station, or any significant interior space.

Students each choose their own program, providing the flexibility to explore areas of personal interest in architecture. Techniques and strategies employed by industrial designers and architects with prefabrication expertise guide the studio’s overall design process.
