Statement

At its heart, my work is about the fundamentals of painting: chromatics, composition, substrate, dimensionality, and presentation. I use varying strategies of material improvisation to explore the medium as material substance. Sculptures are made from constitute parts of the painting process; installations function to support the objects and literally reflect back the process. A quick gestural painting on foam is transformed by being submerged into paint; it accumulates decisions about color and form and is then bisected to reveal the process. Another painting is ground into dust and reformed into a blob of color. These objects, along with paintings, are then moved into the context of installation, becoming gestures themselves in a larger aesthetic realm.
