Biography

MArch, Washington University in St. Louis; BA in English Language and Literature/Letters, Northwestern University

Valerie Chang Greer, AIA, LEED AP, is an architect and former vice president at HOK, where she practiced for 12 years, working on a variety of building types. Greer was a senior designer on the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), an international research university located on the Red Sea. The 5.5 million-square-foot campus was designed and built in three years. It has been honored with numerous awards that Greer was instrumental in submitting for, including the AIA COTE Top Ten Green Projects Award. Greer has practiced out of several HOK office locations, including six months in Singapore while working on the Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. Most recently, she led the effort to design and build the new HOK St. Louis office.

Greer's interest in materials and craft led her to collaborate with two interior architects through HOK Product Design to create two new lines of ceramics for Lea Ceramiche, an Italian company. Pixel and Nest were launched in spring 2014 at Milan's Salone, with a showroom installation designed by Greer and her team.

In addition to project work, Greer played a leading role in creating the HOK Design Annual, a publication that features the design work of the firm worldwide. The sixth book in the series will be published this fall with a special edition, HOK Tall Buildings, published in 2014.

Greer has taught several design studios at Washington University, most recently the 419 studio in the graduate program and the new seminar Special Topics in Professional Practice. Among speaking engagements, she has given talks at the Young Architects Forum St. Louis (YASTL), the Sam Fox School's Women in Architecture Symposium, and Washington University's McDonnell International Scholars Academy symposium in Hong Kong.

In 2014, Greer was honored with the St. Louis Business Journal's 40 Under 40 Award, the Sam Fox School's Recent Alumni Award, and Engineering News Record Midwest's 20 Under 40 Award. Greer is a graduate of Leadership St. Louis and remains involved with civic efforts through FOCUS St. Louis.

Greer earned her MArch from Washington University in 2002, graduating with the Frederick Widmann Prize and the AIA Student Medal. She was a co-recipient of the Steedman II Travel Fellowship.
