The Communication Design major is an interdisciplinary learning environment devoted to the study of word and image relationships. You will participate in a team-taught curriculum, developed collaboratively by faculty who specialize in graphic design, illustration, motion studies, sound, art direction, writing, brand development, and visual design history.
You will work by hand to develop visual concepts and images in a range of media, and use the computer as an important tool to manipulate type and images. Projects appear in print, digital, and broadcast media.
Juniors learn a wide range of skills in image making, design, typography, and messaging. Seniors specialize in one or two areas, from publication design and information design, to book and editorial illustration, to motion graphic and animation, completing the program with a senior seminar project.
Most students in Communication Design complete an internship the summer between junior and senior years. Graduates are prepared to enter an increasingly multi-disciplinary professional field as designers, illustrators, art directors, writers, and animators armed with a specific set of design skills as well as general critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities.
