Graduate Scholarships & Financial Aid



The Sam Fox School strives to provide aid to as many applicants as possible. Financial aid packages most often consist of a combination of fellowships or scholarships, teaching and/or technical assistantships, and loan assistance.
An application for financial aid will have no effect on decisions for graduate admission to the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design or the Graduate School of Art. Financial aid awards are based on separate considerations of academic excellence, artistic/architectural ability, and financial need.

Students who are seeking any amount of scholarship support or financial aid from the Sam Fox School to assist in funding their graduate studies are required to apply for financial aid by the deadlines below. All applications for financial aid should be submitted directly to the school to which you are applying.

For all returning Sam Fox School graduate students who are applying for aid to support summer school.

Feb 5, 2022

Fall Financial Aid Deadline: Graduate School of Art

For all applicants and returning students in the MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture and MFA in Visual Art programs who are seeking aid for the upcoming academic year.

Feb 15, 2022

Fall Financial Aid Deadline: Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design

For all applicants and returning students in the MArch, MLA, MSAAD, MSAS, and MUD programs who are seeking aid for the upcoming academic year.

Sam Fox Ambassadors Fellowship Program


The Sam Fox Ambassadors Graduate Fellowship Program awards 10 full-tuition scholarships each year to outstanding candidates for graduate study.

Ambassadors are selected from top applicants to the following degree programs: Master of Architecture, Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art, Master of Fine Arts in Illustration & Visual Culture, Master of Landscape Architecture, and Master of Urban Design. No separate application form is needed.



University-Wide Scholarships


Several University-wide scholarship and fellowship opportunities are available to all graduate students, and require the submission of a separate application. Deadlines vary, but early applications—preferably by mid-December—are strongly encouraged.

Chancellor's Graduate Fellowship

The Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship provides strong encouragement as well as generous financial support to outstanding and diverse students interested in careers as college or university professors. The deadline for completed applications and supporting documents is January 25.

Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship

A joint enterprise of the Monticello College Foundation and Washington University, the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship provides renewable awards covering the cost of tuition for graduate study by women in a number of fields, including architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. The application deadline is January 25.

McDonnell International Scholars Academy

The McDonnell International Scholars Academy at Washington University provides graduate and professional students from around the world with an extraordinary educational experience. The McDonnell Academy seeks to develop a cohort of future leaders in a global university system and promote global awareness and social responsibility. The program offers renewable full-tuition awards plus programmatic support to students from varied degree programs and different countries, in order to maximize the diversity of the program and create a rich dialogue and experience. Selection criteria consider the applicant’s academic distinction, global mindset, leadership, and community. The application deadline is January 31.
