Ever wondered where artwork goes when it's not on view or what the heck a registrar does? Now is your chance to find out.

The Kemper Art Museum's second annual career exploration event features brief panel discussions with museum professionals from around the St. Louis area, including the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum, Missouri History Museum, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, and Griot Museum of Black History. Plus, find out about open positions and upcoming internships at these museums.

Event Schedule

3:30–4p: Registration and Welcome
4–4:45p: Research and Teach panels
4:45–5p: Networking Break
5–5:45p: Preserve and Promote panels
5:45–6p: Closing

There will be an ongoing networking reception from 3:30 to 6p, including drinks and light refreshments.

Panel Descriptions

Research: Exhibitions can’t come together without extensive research and writing. Hear from curators and a curatorial research assistant about the immense amount of planning and preparation it takes to mount an exhibition or install a gallery.

Teach: Once exhibitions are installed, it’s up to educators to bring them to life. Find out how museum educators create interpretive materials, design tours and public programs, and connect with the surrounding community.

Preserve: Much important work in museums takes place outside the galleries. Go behind the scenes and discover how collections managers, registrars, archivists, and conservators protect, maintain, and keep track of their institutions’ sometimes vast collections.

Promote: Does a museum really exist if no one visits? Learn how marketing, development, and visitor services staff get people in the doors, build relationships, and make sure everyone has a good time.

Parking and Directions

This event will take place in the Danforth University Center (DUC) Formal Lounge. The DUC is located off Forsyth Blvd between Skinker and Big Bend, and maps and directions are available on the DUC website. Visitor parking is available in the garage underneath the DUC for a small fee.

To reach the Formal Lounge, take either the elevators or stairs on the north (campus) side of the garage up to the second floor. The Formal Lounge is at the end of the hallway to the left from the stairs or directly next to the elevator. A floor plan is also available on the DUC website (the Formal Lounge is the unmarked room in the lower right-hand corner of the second floor).
