Posted by Katherine Welsch February 27, 2015

Work by three BFA in Communication Design seniors—Sophia Brown, Sungsub Kim, and Katherine McCarter—has been selected for inclusion in the Society of Illustrators' 2015 Student Scholarship Competition.

Each year, a jury of professional peers including illustrators and art directors selects the most outstanding works created by college-level illustration students throughout the year. This year's competition yielded entries from 2,275 students representing 86 schools.

The selected works will be featured in a full-color catalog and an exhibition on view May 6-30 at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York.

Consequence of Tomatoes
Artist: Sophia Brown
Medium: Digital
Instructor: D. B. Dowd, professor

"I made this image as part of a fairly stream-of-consciouness zine titled 'Diary of Incidents,'" Brown writes. "In some ways, this image is a portrait of how my brain works on a daily basis, especially when I'm creating images from life. I like finding a point of entry to talk about seemingly banal subject matter, like a bottle of ketchup, because it's surprising how interesting its backstory can be.

"A naive but candid representation of an often used but rarely followed cliché: You are what you eat," Kim writes.
