Blakely Awarded Graham Foundation Grant
Assistant professor Shantel Blakely has been awarded a research grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts for her project “Charles E. Fleming, Architect.” The funds will support the commission of photographer Lee Bey to photograph Fleming’s buildings in St. Louis. Fleming, who earned a certificate from WashU in 1961 and is the School’s first known African-American graduate in architecture, is the subject of a monograph in progress by Blakely, with Eric P. Mumford, the Rebecca and John Voyles Professor of Architecture.
Kemper Art Museum's Picasso Painting Featured in Exhibition Coverage
This review of the exhibition Picasso & Les Femmes d’Alger by the German newspaper FAZ includes Pablo Picasso’s Les femmes d'Alger (Women of Algiers), Variation “N” (1955), on loan to Museum Berggruen from the Kemper Art Museum. The review, among other things, compares the Kemper Art Museum’s painting, the penultimate one in the series, with the last one in the series, Variation “O”. Cheers Appointed Interim Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education at George Washington University
Imani M. Cheers (BFA02) has been appointed interim senior associate provost for undergraduate education at George Washington University, beginning June 1. Cheers is associate director of the School of Media and Public Affairs, associate professor of media and public affairs, and associate professor of digital storytelling at GW. In her new role, she will focus on enhancing the academic experience of undergraduates across the university.
Tao Delivers Talk for Missouri Historical Society's STL History Live Series
Peter Tao (BA79) recently delivered a virtual talk titled Stories of Chinese St. Louis: William and Anne Tao as part of the STL History Live series, presented by the Missouri Historical Society. In the talk, Peter Tao explores how his parents, William (SI50/SI97) and Anne Tao, made an indelible impact on the greater St. Louis community through their company, William Tao & Associates; by mentoring and advocating for the St. Louis Chinese community; and through their civic philanthropy.
Gephardt Institute Names 2021 Arts as Civic Engagement Residents
Three Sam Fox School students have been named 2021 Arts as Civic Engagement residents by the Gephardt Institute. The program supports four WashU undergraduate students in a Civic and Community Arts Residency at regional arts organizations. Colleen Avila (BA23 in Art) will work with the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Sophie Devincenti (BA22, Second Major in Art) will work with COCA, and Cameron Thompson (BA23, Second Major in Design—Communication Concentration) will work with The Griot Museum for Black History.
Dugar & Perez Named 2021 Goldman Fellows
Architecture students Madison Dugar (BS23) and Brandon Perez (BS24) have been named to the 2021 cohort of Goldman Fellows. Presented by the Gephardt Institute, the program is a unique opportunity for undergraduates to spend a summer in St. Louis with other WashU students who care about the St. Louis community. Both Dugar and Perez are pursuing a minor in creative practice for social change.
