Weber Named 2021 Loeb Fellow
Jordan Weber, the spring 2021 Artist-in-Residence at the Sam Fox School, WashU’s Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, & Equity (CRE2), and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, was named one of Harvard’s 2021 Loeb Fellows. Weber is a regenerative land sculptor and environmental activist based in Des Moines, who works at the cross section of social justice and environmental racism.
Umemoto's Firm Honored for O-14
O-14, a 22-story office tower by Reiser + Umemoto, RUR Architecture, has been awarded a 10 Year Award of Excellence by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Nanako Umemoto, professor of practice, is a principal of the firm. The award recognizes tall building projects that have achieved sustainability and wellness at the highest and broadest level, and that exhibit innovations in design that will enhance the cities in which they are built, as well as and the lives of the inhabitants.
Toppins Published in AIGA Eye on Design
Associate professor Aggie Toppins published “We Need Graphic Design Histories That Look Beyond the Profession” with AIGA Eye on Design. “Visual communication is not only a professional domain,” says Toppins. “It’s an active cultural practice shared by all. What would it look like to expand the scope of history beyond professional boundaries, and what might we gain from doing this?”
Lee Named Student Brand Ambassador for The HistoryMakers
Studio Art major Jordan Lee (BFA22) was named a 2021-2022 Student Brand Ambassador for The HistoryMakers, the nation’s largest African American video oral history archive. The 24 ambassadors will serve as official representatives for The HistoryMakers Digital Archive on their respective campuses and will work to increase awareness, knowledge, and use of The HistoryMakers Digital Archive.
WashU Awarded USGBC Leadership Award
The University has received an additional honor for the East End Transformation Project. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded WashU one of its 2021 Leadership Awards for excellence in its West North Central Region. Weil Hall was one of the five building projects to earn LEED platinum certification, and the University also received commendation for elements such as Kuehner Court’s green wall and enhancements for bike commuters to reduce carbon emissions.
St. Louis Public Radio Highlights WashU Fashion Design in Interview
Evie Hemphill of St. Louis Public Radio recently interviewed Valerie Battle Kienzel, the author of Ready to Wear: A History of the Footwear and Garment Industries in St. Louis. “On the apparel end of things, St. Louis can claim to be the place where the juniors market was invented in the first half of the 20th century,” says Hemphill. “Kienzle said Washington University’s fine arts students have a lot to do with that.”
Upcoming Film Screenings by Amter
Films by Michael Amter (BFA90) will be screened this summer at several festivals, including the 9th International Video Poetry Festival 2021 (Institute for Experimental Arts) in Athens, Greece, and at the Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival.
New Bruno David Gallery Features Numerous Faculty & Alumni
Bilingual: Abstract & Figurative, a group show featuring works by numerous Sam Fox School faculty, alumni, and others, is on view through August 14 at Bruno David Gallery. Also on view in the gallery’s Window on Forsyth is Toxic Love, an installation by Chris Rubin de la Borbolla.
