Sprawl Session 2: Black Suburban Imaginaries
Scholar Jodi Rios (BA90) is among the individuals participating in the next program of Laboratory for Suburbia, which features public exchanges considering strategies for site-specific art and tactical design in the complex spaces of 21st-century suburbia. Sprawl Session 2: Black Suburban Imaginaries will take place from 2-4p CDT June 29 via Zoom. The program will also featuring architects Germane Barnes and Mira Henry; artists Davion Alston, Autumn Knight, and lauren woods; and scholar Matthew Lassiter. It’s presented by the Luminary, in partnership with The Divided City.
Heyda Presents on Data in Urban Design
Associate professor Patty Heyda will present her research on using data in urban design, including the applications of GIS, at a special online event presented by University Libraries at 4p June 29.
Rembering Larry Giles
Larry Giles, a close friend to many in the Sam Fox School and WashU community, passed away on June 12 from complications due to cancer. He was 73. The founder and president of the National Building Arts Center (NBAC), he preserved countless building artifacts from the greater St. Louis region and beyond. “When he began, many preservationists thought this type of salvaging was ghastly, like an autopsy,” said senior lecturer Michael Allen, Giles’ successor as NBAC president, in this St. Louis Post-Dispatch story on Giles’ life and impact. “But Larry kept blazing that path, and now it’s an accepted practice.”
Trivers Leads Major Restoration Project for the Missouri Capitol
Trivers served as lead designer on the major restoration project for the Missouri Capitol, which was completed this past December. The team worked with its consultants and the Office of Administration to evaluate existing conditions, provide details specific to various repair requirements, qualified stone selections, and successfully navigated a multi-year project schedule. Architecture alumni Joel Fuoss (MArch02) and Joe Brinkmann (BTech92) are principals at the firm.
Golf the Galleries Hole Designs
Sam Fox School staff members Bryce Robinson (assistant manager, shops and making spaces) and Matt Branham and Greg Cuddihee (instructional technicians) designed and created hole number four, “Heads of WashU Shops,” for the The Sheldon’s annual Golf the Galleries event. Alum Jenny Murphy (BFA09) and Perennial created hole number 7, “What Goes Around.” The indoor course is fully playable (and playful!) and open from July 2-September 6.
Yocom Featured in Too Cute!
Too Cute!, a group exhibition featuring work by Taylor Yocom (MFA18) and others, opens from 12-2p July 3 at Public Space One in Iowa City. The show is on view through July 28.
