2022-03-14 • Sam Fox School
The Sam Fox School is pleased to share wonderful news updates for two accomplished members of our faculty. Mónica Rivera has been appointed as full professor with tenure, and Monika Weiss has been promoted to full professor, both effective July 1, 2022. Both Mónica Rivera and Monika Weiss have made significant contributions to the School in teaching, creative practice, and service, and both are very deserving of this recognition and promotion.
Mónica Rivera joined the Sam Fox School faculty in 2015, where she teaches housing. Her Barcelona-based firm, Emiliano López Mónica Rivera, works on multiple scale projects, including housing, residential, and institutional buildings. The award-winning practice is internationally known for sustainable material and methods research and carefully crafted works that understand architecture as a cultural endeavor that is deeply engaged with people and the environment. Among ongoing projects, the firm recently won a public competition to build a nearly zero-energy, intergenerational public housing building in Mallorca, Spain. Mónica Rivera is also collaborating with Eric Mumford (Rebecca and John Voyles Professor of Architecture) on Edges of Privacy: Open Access Walkways in Collective Housing, a project based on a seminar she taught in spring ’21, and now supported by a grant from the McDonnell International Scholars Academy. She serves as a board member for the Association of Women Faculty at WashU and is chair of graduate architecture in the Sam Fox School. Full bio
Monika Weiss joined the Sam Fox School faculty in 2011. She creates intermedia works in film, sound, installation, drawing, and performance, often evoking ancient rituals of lamentation in the context of trauma and collective memory. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is featured in publications and collections worldwide. Dedicated to victims of gendered violence, her forthcoming outdoor monument/anti-monument Nirbhaya will open in April 2023 on Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, New York, a gateway to the United Nations. A sister version of the piece is planned as a permanent installation at the Centre for Polish Sculpture, Oronsko, National Heritage Institution. As part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art series Artists on Art, a film with Monika Weiss speaking on her work and the work of Goya premiered in April 2021. She was granted tenure in 2013 and serves as area coordinator for Time-Based + Media Art in the Sam Fox School. She is also making significant contributions teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Full bio
