Gia Daskalakis

Gia Daskalakis teaches undergraduate and graduate studios at the core and advanced levels, as well as undergraduate- and graduate-level seminars. Her interest in the aesthetic contexts of architectural production includes urban/landscape interventions; ideas of “terrain vague,” urban agriculture, ecology, and the environment; and broader investigations of the relationships among architecture, landscape, and urbanism. Before coming to Washington University in 1995, she taught at the Boston Architectural Center, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Parsons: The New School for Design, and University of Michigan. She was the recipient of an award from the Architectural League of New York for the Young Architects Forum Competition, and also has received ACSA Design Awards and AIA-St. Louis awards. Daskalakis’ work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally, including with the traveling exhibition Landscape Urbanism and the UIA Exhibition in Barcelona; for the latter exhibition, she served as the coordinator of American universities for the UIA conference. In 1993, she was the Muschenheim Fellow at the University of Michigan. Daskalakis served as co-editor and author of Stalking Detroit, an anthology of essays, projects, and images published bilingually (Spanish and English) in 2001 by Actar, for which she received a Graham Foundation Grant. Her work as principal of Das: 20 Architecture Studio has been published in Summa (Argentina), Quaderns D'Arquitectura/Urbanisme (Spain), On Disegno (Spain), and Dimensions, Journal of the College of Architecture + Urban Planning (University of Michigan). Most recently, her work has been included in group exhibitions in Brussels, Belgium, and Istanbul, Turkey.
