Emily Rupright (BS22 in Architecture) was part of the first place team in the Project Precast 2022 competition, which took place March 2-5 in Kansas City.
The competition is an intense two-day charrette, featuring teams composed of one architecture student, one construction management student, and one structural engineering student who are guided by a professional from a precast company. This year’s challenge asked teams to design a tornado-resilient multipurpose shelter for an existing school.
A total of 18 students from 13 universities across the country were selected to participate in the competition. Rupright teamed up with Alexander Fairley (Middle Tennessee State University) and Joshua Shade. Each team member was awarded $1,000 as part of their first place finish. Assistant professor Pablo Moyano served as Rupright’s faculty advisor.
“The most valuable part of the experience was collaborating with engineers and construction management students,” Rupright said. “Design students don’t usually get this experience until going into the professional world, and it was great to learn about what that collaboration process is like.”
The 2022 competition was sponsored by PCI Foundation, which looks for integrations between academia and companies from the precast concrete industry.
