James Siena

Underdogs

James Siena embarked on a project of 3 large-scale prints with Island Press in the fall of 2012 that involved careful measuring and very precise edges. The project was buoyed by student helpers from the Printmaking program at the Sam Fox School to cut humanly perfect, large-scale arrows from book board and PVC. A departure from Siena’s well-known, meandering abstractions, the images refer overtly to commercial signage, but play both visually and metaphorically with contrast and recusancy as is conveyed in the title of this group of prints: Underdogs.

About the artist

James Siena (BFA, Cornell University, 1979) is a New York-based artist whose complex, rule-based linear abstractions have situated him firmly within the trajectory of modern American art.
