Willie Cole

America / Stimulus

For the centering concept of his collaboration with Island Press, “America / Stimulus”, Willie Cole returned to a strategy evident in his well known “blackboard” works. Combining lithographic and letterpress processes, Cole used the word “America” as an acronym to generate seemingly random sentences that reveal potent messages. Throughout his career, Cole has transformed ordinary domestic objects into powerful works of art, embedded with references to the African American experience and inspired by West African religion, mythology, and culture.
