About the artist
Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey served as the Arthur L. and Sheila Prensky Island Press Visiting Artist in fall 2011. In his work, Bailey constructs multi-layered narratives that explore the history of African Americans, as well as his own personal history and influences. Best known for his three-dimensional paintings composed from vintage photographs, found objects, maps, and painted words, his most recent work has progressed into the realm of sculpture and site-specific installations. Bailey was the recipient of the 2010 Factor Prize for Southern Art. His work is represented in leading museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
